Harry Bertoia
Bertoia ha lasciato l'Italia a quindici anni. Ha fatto di tutto, ha lavorato per le aziende più diverse, ha disegnato anche gioielli.
Bertoia dichiara che il suo design intende rendere più gradevoli e diversificati gli spazi, attraverso un processo di combinazione fra lavoro tecnico e arti creative. - Lo spazio le attraversa - scrive Harry Bertoia delle sue sedie - guardandole bene, si noterà che sono fatte soprattutto d'aria, come una scultura.
Bertoia nasce come pittore e scultore (sculture metalliche), pur rendendosi conto che la progettazione di una sedia esigeva soprattutto soluzioni a problemi funzionali (e le ha trovate, sulle sue sedie si sta bene), egli ha visto la sedia anche come una scultura nello spazio, per questo aveva a cuore principalmente la spazialità, il colore e le caratteristiche del metallo.
Le sedie in filo metallìco - esistono in diverse versioni - sono oggi note in tutto il mondo. |

Harry Bertoia
Bertoia left Italy when he was 15 years old. In Detroit he studied sculpture and painting at the “Institute of technology”.
Bertoia states that his design is intended to create a space which is more pleasurable and diversified via the process of combining technical work with creative art.
-Space permeates them- he wrote of his chairs. -If you look at them carefully you can see that they are made primarily of air, like a sculpture-, Bertoia is known primarily as a painter and sculptor (metal sculptures).
Although he realized that designing a chair required primarily the resolution on functional problems (which he found, his chairs are comfortable) he also visualized the chair as a sculpture in space.
This is why he took to heart - primarily the spatial quality, the colour and the characteristics of the metal.
The chairs construc-ted of metal wire- there are several versions - are objects, known today the world over. |
