Eileen Gray
Eileen Gray ebbe origini scozzesi-irlandesi. Quando il padre mori nel 1900 si trovava già da due anni a Londra e frequentava corsi di disegno alla “Slade School”.
Scoprì il laboratorio di D. Charles, un pittore specializzato in lacche. Collaborò con lui e imparò tutto quello che serviva per il periodo della sua carriera professionale.
Nel 1902 andò a Parigi, dove continuò a perfezionarsi nell’arte del disegno e delle lacche orientali. Qui incontrò il giapponese Sugawara con cui perfezionò la conoscenza dell’uso della lacca. Ma soltanto sei anni più tardi osò partecipare con propri lavori a una mostra di arredatori.
Ancora a ottant’anni ha trasformato in una casa estiva per se stessa un fienile vicino a St. Tropez. Poco prima della sua morte ha avuto la soddisfazione di una mostra dei suoi lavori più significativi al “Musée Des Arts Decoratifs” di Parigi. |

Eileen Gray
Eileen Gray was of Scottish-Irish origin. When her father died in 1900 she had already completed two years of study at the “Slade School“ of design in London. She then discovered the workshop of D. Charles, a painter who was specialized in lacquers. She worked with him and learned all that was necessary for that period of her professional career.
In 1902 she went to Paris where she improved her design and oriental lacquer knowledge. Here she met Sugawara, a Japanese, who helped her to perfect her use of lacquer. Only six years later she dared to exhibit her work at an interior design exhibition.
At the age of 80, she transformed a hayloft near S. Tropez into a summer residence for herself. Shortly before dying she had the satisfaction of a retrospection showing of her most significant works given at the “Musée Des Arts Décoratifs“ in Paris. |
